From 1990-1992, Bob McDonald conducted research on corporate and private training programs. He was especially interested in how people got to be in positions in which they could use their most powerful talents, in which they would feel most satisfied and fulfilled, and in which they could be most productive.

What he found is that typical approaches to corporate training and coaching employ a rather one-dimensional approach in which one factor - such as personality - is presumed to be most significant. His insight was that people are just more complex than this and that you have to take more than one or two factors into account if you are going to see any lasting gains in satisfaction, connection to company or performance.

Over the next several years, Bob created programs that help people look at a bigger picture of themselves - one that includes not only their work goals and money goals, but also their goals around their family, health, spirituality and values. He found that when people create a career vision in this way, they are happier, less stressed, more connected to their companies and more productive at work. He also found that these gains do not go away - long-term follow-up shows that gains from Whole Person programs were fully retained many months afterwards.
